Janet Finch-Saunders, the Welsh Conservative Member of the Senedd representing Bangor, Conwy and Môn, has praised firefighters for their response to the major blaze at Conwy Golf Club.
The MS said her thoughts were with club manager Matt Parsley, staff and members following Saturday night's fire, which caused significant damage to the historic clubhouse.
She has also urged the public to follow safety advice and stay away from the premises until the site has been declared safe.
Janet said: “I would like to thank the brave North Wales Fire and Rescue team for their fast response in tackling the blaze and for issuing guidance to nearby residents to keep their windows and doors closed due to the smoke.
“Smoke is toxic and can have serious impacts on residents’ health. I am also relieved to hear that no one was injured during the fire.
“My thoughts are with Matt Parsley and everyone at Conwy Golf Club following Saturday’s fire, which resulted in significant damage.
“The club, which dates back to 1890, is part of the history and spirit of the community, so news of the fire was deeply saddening.”
She added: “It is vital that members of the public follow the guidance issued by the club and do not visit the premises until it has been declared safe.”
The fire prompted a major response from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, with crews working to bring the blaze under control and remaining at the scene as they dealt with its aftermath.
Nearby residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed because of the smoke, while members of the public were asked to avoid the area.
Conwy Golf Club has a particularly important place in the history of Welsh golf. Founded in 1890, it is the third oldest golf club in Wales, although golf has been played on the Morfa since 1869.
The course has hosted several prestigious competitions, including the Curtis Cup in 2021, when Great Britain and Ireland took on the United States in one of the leading events in women's amateur golf.
The club has also experienced a major fire in its history. Its previous clubhouse was destroyed by fire in 1933, resulting in the loss of historic records, photographs and trophies. A replacement building opened the following year.
The latest incident has prompted an outpouring of support for the club from members and the wider golfing community.
The cause of Saturday night's fire has not been established.
