Inspired by the care and support his family received from St David’s Hospice, 39 year old James Belton is taking on a 50 mile Ultra Race today to show his appreciation to the charity.
James Belton former Colwyn Bay resident, now of Stockport, is running the Lakeland 50 in memory of his mother Judy.
James said: “On June 15th 2019, we lost my mum following a three year battle with cancer. When she died she was being cared for by the incredible staff at St David’s Hospice.
“She felt comfortable and cared for and they were a huge support for our entire family. I hope to raise as much as I can for the hospice as a way to show my gratitude.”
Due to the Ultra Marathon event being postponed in 2020, James has had to continue his training for another twelve months in readiness for the event which happens today (Saturday 24 July).
Setting off at 11.30 am, he will join competitors on a demanding trail course across the Lake District, starting at the Northern end of Ullswater and finishing at Coniston with 3100m of ascent.
On the Lakeland 50 website, it quotes the event as being UK’s Premier Ultra Trail Race and says ‘There is nothing ‘easy’ about the Lakeland 50 no matter how well you prepare, but ‘easy’ and ‘achievement’ are rarely part of the same sentence’.
James Wilde, Conwy Area Fundraiser for St David’s Hospice said: “Good luck James! You have already smashed your original fundraising target for the Hospice, raising over £1,200 and I am sure you will smash the event too! We wish you every luck and hope the hills are kind! You have raised an outstanding amount of money and it will make a huge difference to end of life care in North West Wales.”
