Jobs at risk as Afon Conwy Brewers Fayre faces closure

The Afon Conwy Brewers Fayre has been confirmed for closure as part of a sweeping UK-wide restructuring by hospitality giant Whitbread.

The site, located at Glan Conwy Corner on the busy A470 near Conwy, is among a large number of branded restaurant venues set to shut or be converted as Whitbread shifts its focus toward expanding its hotel offering.

The company, which owns the Premier Inn brand, has announced plans to close or repurpose hundreds of its Brewers Fayre and Beefeater locations. The move is expected to result in around 3,800 job losses across the UK and Ireland, although Whitbread says some affected staff may be redeployed within the business.

The Afon Conwy site is a well-known stop-off point for both locals and tourists travelling through the Conwy Valley, and its closure will mark a significant change for the area.

Whitbread said the decision follows “significant inflationary pressures”, including rising business rates and increased National Insurance costs, which have made some restaurant operations less viable.

The restructuring is part of a wider strategy to expand the company’s hotel capacity, with many restaurant sites set to be converted into additional Premier Inn rooms to meet growing demand in the accommodation sector.

No specific closure date has yet been confirmed for the Afon Conwy site, but it has been formally included on the company’s closure list.
