Llandovery 36 RGC 35
SRC Round 4, Saturday 4th October 2025
Minutes before kick-off, the Llandovery rain stopped as the wind dropped, with both sides starting the game with pace and intent.
Delwyn Jones and Osian Llewelyn made a couple of dents in the Drovers' defence, running hard.
Great work from Sam Williams to steal the ball, and a neat 50:22 got them into Drovers' half with the lineout as well.
The opening score came from the boot of Dion Jones, with the penalty splitting the sticks.
From the restart, they were back in the Drovers 22, winning the collisions and clinical when they got into a good position, and when they moved the ball wide, Osian Llewelyn capitalised to dive in the corner for the try. The Conversion hits the inside of the post and went over from Dion Jones.
Good phases from Drovers, get the line but not over. They went again with the tap penalty, but RGC got bodies and hands between the ball and the ground, which was a massive moment in the game.
With the homeside going close but not getting any points, it showed when they opted for the 3 points from a penalty by Ioan Hughes. Minutes later, RGC hit back with a Dion Jones penalty from distance.
The pressure was building on the Gogs line, and it was made harder when Jac Petch-Jones was shown the yellow card.
With the extra man, the homeside moved the ball wide, giving full-back Jac Davies the gap to score. Hughes added the extras.
RGC were looking lively and just before the break, even with 14 men, the Gogs scrum half Tudur Jones somehow had the vision to spot a gap on the touchline, and backed it up with pace to run from halfway to score. With Dion Jones was on target again with the conversion.
When the game was open, Llandovery were struggling to weather the RGC storm. Full-back Caio Parry collected the ball in his own half and sailed past the tackles before James Brown finished in the corner.
The visitors' work rate continued to be high, winning the collisions, as Llandovery were knocking taking the ball into contact and not finding a way through.
Possession was building in the Drovers' favour, and they did then go over from Hughes, who added with the conversion.
As the clock hit 65 minutes, it reached a crucial spell with both sides knowing a score could change the game's narrative, as players were looking to be the main character.
RGC’s scrum was pushing hard, the linespeed in defence was full of energy and the quick ball at the breakdown.
They won the penalty, and but Dion Jones pulled it wide.
The Gogs got to the line, but couldn’t get the ball down, but did come away from the penalty from the boot of Dion Jones.
Llandovery were never out of the game, and with 10 minutes remaining, Chris Jones went over from close, but Hughes couldn't find the target with the conversion, and it was a 6-point game.
Unlike last week, Lee Reese couldn’t get any time on the ball - with Delwyn Jones and James Brown chasing him down, leaving him with no option but to kick.
That collective defensive effort, resulted in RGC regaining possession, and an attack gave Osian Burt a break down the middle, before Caio Parry was set up in the corner for his 2nd and RGC’s bonus point try. Again, the nudge from Dion Jones was on target for a 35-22 lead.
With the game ticking down, the Drovers kicked to the corner, and it was kept in for Jac Davies to dab down. The boot of Hughes found the posts from the touchline.
It reached 80 minutes, as Llandovery reached the RGC line. They had the lineout, had the referee's whistle behind and them with a couple of opportunities to get into an attacking position. A turnover from RGC looked like the game was won, but the referee pulled it back, and the Drovers had another lineout.
They found the jumper, hit the drive and went over. Leaving Hughes with the chance to win it with the conversion.
From the touchline, the fly-half claimed the points and helped maintain their unbeaten start to the season.
RGC’s fly-half Dion Jones knows his side can take plenty from the game “That performance deserved a better outcome, we showed quality moments in difficult conditions throughout the 80 minutes. Taking all that into the break, we can build on today before we play Swansea.”
