Clwyd West MS Darren Millar and Rhyl Conservative Councillors Brian Jones and Justine Evans are calling on Denbighshire County Council's Cabinet to defer the decision on Cefndy Healthcare pending an independent review of alternatives to closure.

All three attended a public meeting yesterday afternoon held at Rhyl's Little Theatre, organised by Unison, at which workers and their families outlined the impact a closure would have on workers.

At the meeting, Darren made an impassioned plea for the Cabinet to defer the decision to allow an independent review looking at all possible alternatives to be carried out.

The Cabinet are due to make a final decision on the proposed closure at their meeting in County Hall, Ruthin, tomorrow morning.

Speaking afterwards, Mr. Millar said: "The strength of feeling regarding these proposals has been clear from the moment they were first put forward and was clearly evident at yesterday's well-attended public meeting.

"The general feeling is that all potential alternatives to safeguard Cefndy Healthcare have not been fully explored and therefore to make a final decision tomorrow on its future would be a huge mistake.

"Workers at Cefndy Healthcare are worried sick about their future and deserve job security over the Christmas period.

"As I have previously stated, Cefndy Healthcare provides a real lifeline for the disabled people and others who work there, providing them with a real sense of purpose. Since it was established near on 50 years ago, it has been a shining example of what inclusive employment can achieve and the council should be exploring every avenue possible to safeguard it."

Leader of the Conservative Group on Denbighshire County Council, Cllr Brian Jones, said: "It is obviously clear to any business minded individual or sector that the DCC Cabinet should immediately defer the closure decision of Cefndy Healthcare.

"The future of Cefndy can easily be secured through a private sector mentality approach to overcome the supposed current financial and investment issues."

Rhyl East Cllr Justine Evans added: "As backbench councillors, we were only told of the proposals to close Cefndy Healthcare just a few weeks before Cabinet were due to make a decision on it.

"Since that time there has been much challenge regarding the proposal and I have listened intently to all sides of the argument. However,  I remain convinced that Cefndy Healthcare can be saved, and indeed, thrive, with the right approach.

"It is therefore crucial that all avenues are fully explored and the only way for this to be done properly is through an independent review."
