Legal setback for Gwynedd’s fight against holiday homes

Cyngor Gwynedd has lost a legal challenge against measures to control second homes in the county after months of legal arguments.

The council argues that they have a duty to help local people live in communities which are seeing property prices sky rocket due to holiday home development.

Campaigners against Article 4 opposed the requirement for planning permission to convert residential properties into second homes or holiday lets, arguing it would devalue homes.

A judge ruled the council's cabinet hadn't entirely informed local councillors on the implications of Article 4 or had misunderstood its implementation.

The People of Gwynedd Against Article 4 campaign group have now said that they will take action against the council for redress.

However, existing measures will remain in force during an appeal, meaning the council will continue to apply the controls outlined in the new act.
