May 07, 2025 - 551 views

Prepare to be enchanted by "Llys Helyg: Beach of Dreams, " a unique contemporary performance blending drama, dance, and music inspired by the captivating local myth of a lost kingdom beneath the sea off Llandudno West Shore.

This striking spectacle, featuring talented local school pupils alongside professional dancers and musicians, will take place on Friday, May 9th, 2025, with the main performance commencing at 6:30pm on West Shore Beach (right at the top end past the boating lake).

‘Beach of Dreams’ is a UK-wide series of seafront-based community events throughout the month of May.

The day will begin with creative, open workshops on the beach and promenade from 3:30pm, inviting the public of all ages to participate in building a 'sandcastle' village alongside a giant sandcastle created by an artist, learn the Llys Helyg story and contribute to a large golden torc especially created by Theatr Prysor. This precedes the main performance, which will be framed by approximately 100 ‘Beach of Dreams’ silk pennants and flags.

The live show at 6:30pm will feature a specially composed soundscape by Morgan Elwy, acting scenes, and dynamic dance, culminating in a grand feast scene with a lively Twmpath (Welsh Ceilidh).

Expect live Welsh folk music, choreographed dance, and opportunities for audience participation. As the evening progresses, the rising tide will dramatically engulf the main Llys Helyg castle and sandcastle village, set further back on the sands.

Angharad Harrop, Artistic Director of the project, says, “The Llys Helyg: Beach of Dreams’ show is a truly special event that brings together the energy and creativity of local young people with the skill of professional artists. We invite everyone to come and experience this unique retelling of a local legend, culminating in a joyful celebration right on the beautiful West Shore beach. It has been an inspiring project to work on and promises to be an unforgettable evening!"

"Llys Helyg: Beach of Dreams" is the culmination of weeks of workshops led by Dance Collective and Theatr Prysor, made possible thanks to the generous funding from Gwynt y Môr Community Fund - all arranged by Menter Iaith Conwy’s ‘Criw Creu’ committee.
