Llyn Tegid: Keep pets and people out of the water

September 29, 2025 - 240 views

Visitors to Llyn Tegid in Bala are being warned of a harmful blue-green algae in the water.

Health experts and the Eryri National Park are urging caution as contact can be highly poisonous to humans and animals, including dogs and livestock.

Ingestion or skin contact with the algae can cause serious illness, and pets can become fatally ill.

The algae can form blooms and discolour the water under certain conditions. These microscopic organisms, also known as cyanobacteria, thrive in warm, shallow, nutrient-rich waters with lots of sunlight.

Keep an eye out for floating mats or scums on the water’s surface, which may indicate the presence of blue-green algae. Show caution when bathing and do not allow pets to drink or swim in the water.
