Independent Living Skills (ILS) students from Coleg Llandrillo recently organised a charity 'Spring Bulbs and Dog Biscuits' sale at the college's Rhos-on-Sea campus, where canine-lovers and green-fingered staff and students alike were able to pick up a bargain or two.

The group of students - who have mild to moderate learning disabilities, severe learning disabilities and social and emotional behavioural difficulties - spent weeks preparing for the event.

They initially planted the bulbs in their own greenhouse, before potting them up and selling them on the day. The specific bulbs were chosen because they are bee and butterfly friendly.

The LWS 1 (Life and Work Skills) students also made a wide range of dog-friendly biscuits from scratch, utilising nothing but natural ingredients: coconut flour, carrots, sweet potato, bananas and honey. They did a lot of research on the best healthy and tasty ingredients that dogs prefer, that were suitable.

They raised over £100 in a two-hour break from their studies. The proceeds will go to St David's Hospice, as many of the students are involved in weekly work experience placements at the charity's shop.

Learning support assistant Hayley Jones said:They have worked really hard as a team: from the initial planting of the bulbs, to eventually selling them to staff and students in main reception.

"They also really loved making the dog biscuits which were very popular with customers".
