The Welsh Mountain Zoo has welcomed a new female Bactrian camel, Elsa, as a friend and mate for longstanding male resident, Ghengis.

Elsa has made the move from Blackpool Zoo and has been finding her way around the enclosure and settling in to her new home – she’s also been spotted getting very friendly already with handsome, Ghengis!

The Zoo has a long and rich history in breeding Bactrian camels.

Kim Wood, Director of Living Collections, at the Welsh Mountain Zoo commented: “Elsa is a wonderful addition to our animal residents. She has settled in incredibly quickly and the move has been as smooth as we could have hoped for.”

With less than 1000 wild Bactrian camels, conservation of this species, native to the Gobi Desert in Mongolia and in the Gashun Gobi in China, is critical.

They are recognised by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) as critically endangered, with numbers decreasing due to threats from hunting and habitat loss.
