A family who are supported by children's hospice Tŷ Gobaith are backing their Conwy Dark Run event and will even sound the starting horn.

The event in Conwy RSPB this Saturday evening is a family friendly 5km run, walk, dance or skip towards the famous castle along beautiful scenery that will be especially lit up and sound tracked.

Spooky fancy dress is encouraged and there are glow sticks are given to all.

Michelle and Pete Hughes from Penrhyn Bay were introduced to Tŷ Gobaith after their daughter, Matilda was diagnosed with a rare neurological disorder at just four weeks old.

Matilda can suffer up to 30 seizures a day and is also fed through a tube in her stomach.

Michelle said: “We first visited the hospice during the pandemic after a community nurse introduced us.

“It felt very odd letting other people do things for Matilda instead of just us, but the nurses are so professional and understand her condition that we had such trust in them from the start.”

Since then, the family have built a real bond of trust with the hospice and Matilda enjoys regular respite stays allowing the working parents a precious chance to recharge their batteries knowing their daughter is in safe hands.

She said: “When we take Matilda we get the chance to talk to the nurses and sometimes other parents who are going through similar experiences, which is a great help.

“There have been some nice family facing events at Tŷ Gobaith over the summer and some of the groups have started back which is very handy.

“It was lovely to come up and have that time with other families who understand our challenges.”

The Hughes family are happy to support the Dark Run event and Michelle highlighted the importance of fundraising by saying: “The hospice is a lifeline for so many of us.

“The support we get off everybody is fantastic and we’re so grateful.

“We would like to say thank you to people who donate and fundraise to keep Tŷ Gobaith's services running.”
