A local MS has reiterated her demand to see a COVID-19 inquiry for Wales after meeting families touched by personal tragedy during the on-going pandemic.

Following a lengthy meeting with representatives from Bereaved Families for Justice Cymru in Cardiff Bay, Janet Finch Saunders who represents Aberconwy in the Welsh Parliament, called on First Minister Mark Drakeford to reverse his decision.

This national group is calling for a COVID-19 inquiry to be held into the Welsh Government's handling of the Coronavirus pandemic and the potential harm, illness or loss of life which resulted from its actions.

Mrs. Finch-Saunders claims the issue has been further highlighted by the BBC reporting in August that “nearly a quarter of people who have died with COVID-19 in Wales were infected in hospital."

After meeting with the families, she said: “The stories and experiences of these individuals and their families makes it clear that Welsh Government decisions, policies and guidance throughout this pandemic require serious investigation".

"Only by carrying a Wales-specific Inquiry can the appropriate steps be taken to ensure that the Welsh Government learns from this pandemic and that the appropriate measures can be put in place to bring about more effective public health policies in the future, to avert future preventable deaths.

"This must be a top priority in the wake of this pandemic."

"As such, I urge the First Minister to reverse his position and to commit to a Wales-specific COVID-19 Inquiry that opposition parties have been calling for over recent months.”
