Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has today questioned why some key road infrastructure projects remain absent from an important transport report.
Commenting on the work of the North Wales Transport Commission and the report into Menai Strait transport links, he said:
“While I welcome the Transport Commission’s conclusion that North Wales should not be hit by Labour’s anti-motorist road charging plans, I was very disappointed to see that there are no recommendations to deliver either a new Menai Crossing or to get projects previously axed by Labour's disastrous Roads Review back on track.
“It remains the case that the Cardiff-based Labour Government is prioritising transport projects in the South Wales where it is delivering a new dual carriageway to serve the Valleys, a brand-new metro system and a costly nationalised airport. Labour Ministers must give North Wales it's fair share of investment.”
Welsh Conservative Shadow Transport Minister, Natasha Asghar MS added: “When the Labour Government introduced road charging powers through the back door last month, I warned that these powers would be used eventually.
”The report mentions that road charging will not be used yet, but that it is very much a real option for the future. Meanwhile, the First Minister categorically denied that any plans would materialise. You just don’t know where you stand with Labour as they seem to make up their policies with Plaid Cymru as they go along, clearly demonstrated with 20mph speed limits and the Welsh Parliament expansion plans.”
”On page 85, the Transport Commission’s final report states: “We do not consider there to be a case for introducing road charging in the region at this point in time, but we acknowledge that national policy on this matter will develop.”
Welsh Government and the North Wales Transport Commission has been approached for their response.
