A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a 34-year-old man on a beach in Barmouth yesterday.

Emergency services were called to reports of a man in the water at around 3pm. Despite the efforts of those who attended the scene, the man was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

A 24-year-old man from the Birmingham area was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody while enquiries continue.

The man’s family have been informed and the coroner has also been made aware.

Detectives from North Wales Police have launched a major investigation and are now appealing for witnesses to come forward. Senior Investigating Officer Detective Superintendent Chris Bell said officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who was on the beach between 2pm and 4pm.

He urged members of the public who may have taken photos or video footage during that period to submit them to investigators, saying any image could prove significant in establishing the sequence of events.

“We are interested in all photos or videos taken on any part of the beach during the afternoon,” he said. “Any image could be relevant to our investigation, and my team of investigators will review them to ascertain whether they are of any evidential value.”

He added that officers believe there is no wider threat to the public and confirmed that a visible police presence will remain in the area in the coming days to provide reassurance.

“My thoughts remain with the man’s family at this difficult time,” he said.

Police have reiterated that anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has relevant footage, should submit it via the Major Incident Public Portal.

The incident took place at Barmouth beach, a popular seaside destination that is expected to remain the focus of ongoing police enquiries.
