New funds to steer North Wales kids away from crime

July 08, 2025 - 463 views

North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin has launched two new funding programmes for community organisations to prevent crime among children and young people.

The Step Forward Fund supports diversionary activities and anti-social prevention, while the Safer Futures Fund focuses on early intervention and prevention work.

Both funds require organisations to have experience working with youth, operate in North Wales, and have safeguarding policies in place.

The Step Forward Fund will support two projects at up to £25,000 each per year, focusing on diversionary activities and anti-social behaviour (ASB) prevention. This includes evening, weekend and school holiday programmes in ASB hotspot areas, youth engagement hubs, outreach work with young people at risk of offending, and support for those facing school exclusion.

The Safer Futures Fund will support one project at up to £50,000 per year, specifically targeting early intervention and prevention work with children and young people aged 10-18 who are at risk of crime.

Andy Dunbobbin, Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales commented: "These two new funding streams represent a significant investment in the future safety and wellbeing of our communities. By supporting young people through positive diversionary activities and early intervention, we can break the cycle that leads to criminal behaviour and create safer neighbourhoods for everyone.

"I am particularly pleased that these are three-year funding commitments, which will enable successful organisations to develop sustainable, long-term programmes that can make a real difference. We know that investing in our young people today is the most effective way to prevent crime tomorrow, and I'm excited to see the innovative approaches that will emerge from these funding opportunities."
