Reforms to Conwy County Borough Council’s ward boundaries are to go ahead as the Welsh Government accept the recommendations of the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales.

Conwy County Borough Council has been notified by the Welsh Government of the outcome of the Review of Electoral Arrangements.

The review was carried out by The Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales in accordance with the provisions of the Local Government (Democracy) (Wales) Act 2013. All 22 local authorities in Wales have been reviewed.

In a letter to Conwy’s Chief Executive and Leader, the Welsh Government Minister for Finance and Local Government, Rebecca Evans MS said:

“A process has been underway in Wales, over the last four years, to look at the electoral arrangements for the 22 principal local authorities.

"These reviews are important as they reflect the changing nature of communities and their populations to ensure that each community has fair and equal representation.

"This process can, of course, have consequential implications for town and community council boundaries.

"I have considered the recommendations contained within the Commission’s Final Recommendations Report for the County of Conwy and I have decided to accept the recommendations with modifications.

"My officials will therefore be taking forward work to progress drafting of the Order that is required to implement this decision.”

In Conwy County Borough, the number of councillors will change from 59 to 55; some wards will be merged, and the boundaries of other wards altered.

The total number of wards will be reduced from 38 to 30, with 17 of those being multi-member wards.

10 wards will elect 2 councillors, 6 wards will elect 3 councillors, and 1 ward will elect 4 councillors. 18 current wards will see no change under these reforms.

Leader Cllr Charlie McCoubrey said: “We note the new arrangements as outlined in the Commission’s Final Recommendations Report.

"Our Electoral team are now working to implement the changes in preparation for the next Local Government elections, which take place in May 2022.”
