Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board is extending the Park and Ride service operating at Glan Clwyd Hospital for an additional 12 months , while plans for long-term improvements to parking provision at the hospital take shape.
The Park and Ride service was originally introduced as a temporary measure to support parking on site while work took place to remove asbestos and renovate the hospital, and the current arrangements had been due to cease at the end of this month.
A review of parking demand and capacity at Glan Clwyd Hospital is now nearing completion.
In light of the ongoing review of parking on site, the Health Board is retaining a park and ride service beyond 31 March 2020, pending the progression of a Business Case to Welsh Government for additional new parking capacity on site.
Rod Taylor, Director of Estates and Facilities, said: “We continue to ask visitors to help us to reduce the impact of traffic on site.
“Visitors are urged to consider using public transport where possible, and to take into account the time needed to find a parking space when planning a visit to the site.
“We ask staff to consider looking into car-sharing arrangements to help free up parking spaces. Staff can also access the cycle to work scheme.”
Welcoming the extension, Clwyd West AM Darren, who has previously called for the facility to become a permanent feature of parking arrangements for staff, patients and visitors, said; “I am delighted that this service is to continue for another 12 months.
“Hopefully by the end of the 12 months the Health Board will have sorted additional new parking capacity on site, although I don’t understand why they can’t work with the Welsh Government to secure a long term future for the park and ride.
"It is clear from the many messages from my constituents that it is convenient and valued by many patients and staff members, although I have always maintained that it would make much more sense for the Health Board to make this park and ride service available for the staff, freeing up parking for patients on the site”.
In line with Welsh Government policy, car parking at Glan Clwyd Hospital remains free of charge.
