Public warned off West Shore beach amid sewage alerts

Residents are being advised to avoid swimming at Llandidno's West Shore beach due to high levels of faecal bacteria.

More than 50 sewage discharges were found in recent months, leading to 13 pollution alerts on the West Shore.

Janet Finch-Saunders, MS for Aberconwy, has expressed deep concern and anger over the on-going pollution incidents, and called for urgent and lasting action from Welsh Water to prevent further contamination.

Councillor Harry Saville has also raised awareness about the issue.

Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has now written to Natural Resources Wales, the Cabinet Secretary and Dŵr Cymru, outlining the issues and highlighting how unacceptable the conditions are.

Commenting on the latest pollution alert, Mrs. Finch-Saunders said: “The fact that this is the fourteenth pollution alert in six weeks is absolutely shocking.

“West Shore is a very popular beach that attracts many visitors and locals every day. These announcements are extremely concerning, especially during a heatwave and the school summer holidays, which naturally increase the number of people heading to the beach.

“Leaks like this are a serious public health concern and cannot be allowed to continue. Today, I have written to the Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs Huw Irranca-Davies MS, along with Dŵr Cymru and its CEO, Peter Perry, requesting that urgent action is taken to prevent any more of these spills. It is completely unacceptable and puts the health of the public in Llandudno at risk.“
