The crew at Llandudno RNLI are celebrating the achievements of volunteers Benjamin Lee and Leon Bagnall, who this week successfully completed their Tier 2 Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) pass-out — an intensive assessment designed to test the full range of skills required for inshore rescue operations.
The evaluations took place during two planned afloat exercises and were overseen by Coastal Lifeboat Trainer Simon Bunting, who praised the pair for their composure, technical capability, and teamwork.
The Tier 2 pass-out is no small feat. It demands a thorough grasp of vital competencies — from interpreting collision regulations and handling navigational tasks, to commanding the helm in simulated emergencies such as a “man overboard” drill. Candidates must also demonstrate continued mastery of foundational skills from their Tier 1 training, including anchoring, towing, and general seamanship.
The assessments began with a 30-minute theory session, followed by a two-hour practical at sea. Both Ben and Leon handled the challenges with skill and professionalism, embodying the RNLI’s values of courage, dedication, and selflessness.
Senior Station Technician Luke Heritage offered his congratulations: "Ben and Leon have both shown a tremendous commitment to their training and to the wider RNLI cause. This is a proud moment for them and for all of us at the station."
Outside of their life-saving work, Ben runs his own artisan bakery in Craig-Y-Don, while Leon is a freelance photographer and celebrant — roles that reflect the creativity and community spirit they also bring to the lifeboat crew.
As summer approaches and demand on the RNLI increases, fully qualified crew like Ben and Leon will play a vital role in keeping the coast safe.
