Local Senedd member Janet Finch-Saunders has spoken of her delight that Aldi has become the first UK supermarket to ban the sale of disposable barbecues nationwide, in a bid to protect the nation’s forests and wildlife.

Mrs. Finch-Saunders who is also Shadow Minister for Climate Change said she was encouarged by the news.

The move follows the campaign by the Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy which saw her write to 13 retailers last year calling for a review of stock decisions to bring an end to the purchase of disposable BBQs.

Aldi responded positively stating that they had no further plans to sell disposable BBQs again in 2021 and were reviewing their plans for 2022.

Commenting after Aldi’s decision to stop the sale of disposable BBQs across the UK, Mrs. Finch-Saunders said: “I applaud Aldi for taking my concerns seriously and becoming the first UK supermarket to ban the sale of disposable barbecues nationwide.

“It would be fantastic to see other supermarkets follow suit because disposable BBQs are known to have set alight a number of bins, been left under sand on beaches, and charred land.

“Aldi’s decision will lead to the removal of approximately 35 tonnes of single-use waste packaging. Imagine how much greater that figure would be if all supermarkets got on board too!”
