February 12, 2026 - 218 views

There are lots of free and low-cost ways to get your little ones active and support their mental health and wellbeing here in Conwy County this spring.

During Children’s Mental Health Week and ahead of the half term break, we’re showcasing how you and your family can have fun exploring the best play areas, woods, walks and beaches.

Explore Outside! is a searchable directory of places to play for children, young people and their families. It was developed by the Children’s Regional Partnership Board alongside local authority play officers from across the region – https://wellbeingnorth.wales/

Playing outside is a vital part of a happy, healthy childhood – and getting outside in the fresh air more often can have huge benefits for health and wellbeing. It encourages children to move more, sparks their curiosity, and gives them space to explore, imagine and connect with the world around them.

Playing outside also helps to build confidence and resilience, and can strengthen family bonds when we all play together. And here in Conwy there are so many places we can enjoy free of charge, or at low cost.

So, let’s make Children’s Mental Health Week and this half term a time for getting moving, connecting with nature, and enjoying active play together. Head to Explore Outside! to find playgrounds, parks and outdoor spaces your children will love.

Some tips from play leaders

Let the kids set the pace – little ones thrive when they can use their imagination and choose how to play themselves
Get wrapped up whatever the weather – even on cooler or rainy days, playing out in the fresh air helps children burn off some energy in a healthy way

Simple games can be the most fun – tag or hide and seek will get them laughing and running around in no timeInvite friends and family along – connecting with other people boosts their mood and motivation

Notice nature — while you’re out and about take the time to spot birds, trees or changes in the seasons to help connect children to the world around them

About Children’s Mental Health Week and Explore Outside!

Children’s Mental Health Week is delivered by children’s mental health charity Place2Be and runs from February 9 to 15. This year, it aims to boost the crucial sense of belonging felt by children and young people with the theme This Is My Place.

Exploring new places to play with loved ones can help children and young people develop their skills and independence, learn more about their family, neighbours and community, and feel grounded in the place they live.
