Stop selling disposable barbecues says Shadow Minister

Janet Finch-Saunders MS, Shadow Minister for Climate Change, has ramped up her campaign to see food stores stop the sale of disposable barbeques by writing again to supermarkets.

The Member’s campaign has already seen Aldi become the first UK supermarket to ban the sale of disposable barbecues nationwide, and Waitrose decide to stop selling the disposable grills before summer.

However, the Shadow Minister wishes to see other businesses follow the positive example that has been made.

Commenting after writing to supermarkets, Mrs. Finch-Saunders said:“Aldi and Waitrose are to be applauded for taking a pro-climate and pro-nature decision to stop selling disposable BBQs.

“Aldi’s action will lead to the removal of approximately 35 tonnes of single-use waste packaging.

“Waitrose estimate that their ban will save about 70,000 disposable barbecues from being sold a year, and stop 7.4 tonnes of foil and 1.1 tonnes of shrink-wrap plastic being produced annually.

“With spring in the air, and people looking to relax in the great outdoors, it is essential that other supermarkets stand with Aldi and Waitrose.

"Every day they delay a decision, they are contributing to the pollution caused by single use waste, and weakening the quest to achieve Net Zero”.
