Strong community opposition to 500 Old Colwyn houses

Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has pledged to work with residents at a public meeting in Old Colwyn to oppose plans for up to 500 houses on the Peulwys Fields and village Golf Club.

Concerned residents fear strain on services, loss of agricultural land and increased traffic from the proposed development.

The meeting was chaired by Merfin Thomas and attended by Council members and community representatives.

There were presentations by Old Colwyn Residents' Association committee member Brian Cossey, and James Harland the Strategic Planning Policy Manager of Conwy County Borough Council, before questions from the floor.

Darren and Cllr Cheryl Carlisle also addressed the meeting and pledged to work with residents to oppose the proposals.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr. Millar said: “This was a packed public meeting demonstrating the strength of feeling in the community regarding these proposals.

“I was pleased to be given the opportunity to speak and let the residents know that I am 100 per cent behind them and will do everything in my power to ensure that decision-makers listen to the strong objections to the allocation of this land for development.

“It is not that any of us are against the building of new homes, what we are against is overcrowded classrooms, longer waits for an appointment with our GP, and congested roads.

“A development of this scale would place huge strain on our infrastructure and erode the character of the local community in Old Colwyn.

“I will continue supporting residents in opposing this proposal.”

Cllr Cheryl Carlisle said: “This was a very well attended public meeting and it was clear that residents are deeply concerned about the scale of this development.

“As we told those at the meeting, we will continue standing alongside residents to challenge these proposals.”

A formal public consultation on Conwy's Local Development Plan will commence on the 13th October 2025 and residents are encouraged to respond.

Further meetings will be held in Old Colwyn to maximise the number of responses.
