Residents across Conwy are set to benefit after Conwy County Borough Council retained a top environmental accreditation for the twelfth year in a row.

The council has once again achieved Level 5 of the Green Dragon Environmental Standard—the highest level available—highlighting its ongoing commitment to protecting the local environment and improving sustainability across its services.

While the award recognises the council’s internal efforts, officials say the real impact is being felt in communities across Conwy. Improvements in energy efficiency, reduced carbon emissions and better environmental practices are helping to lower running costs, protect natural spaces and create healthier places for people to live.

From cleaner streets and greener public spaces to more efficient council buildings, the changes are designed to benefit residents both now and in the future. The council’s long-term goal of reaching net zero by 2030 is also expected to bring wider benefits, including reduced pollution and a more sustainable local economy.

During the latest assessment, the council was praised for embedding environmental thinking into everything it does—from long-term planning to day-to-day services. Staff across departments were also recognised for their commitment to reducing environmental impact, helping to drive practical changes that residents can see.

Chief Executive Rhun ap Gareth said maintaining the top-level accreditation is a significant achievement, particularly for an organisation of its size. He said the work behind the scenes is helping to deliver real improvements, from cutting energy use to strengthening environmental performance.

For local people, that means a continued focus on protecting Conwy’s coastline, countryside and communities—ensuring the area remains a healthy and attractive place to live, work and visit.

The Green Dragon Standard, which is unique to Wales, encourages organisations to continually improve how they manage their environmental impact. For Conwy, maintaining the highest level signals a long-term commitment to sustainability, with benefits that extend well beyond the council itself and into the everyday lives of residents.
