Welsh Government cash for Conwy "lowest in Wales yet again"

Conwy Council leader Charlie McCoubrey has today responded to the announcement that the county is to be amongst the local authorities receiving the lowest increase in revenue from Welsh Government.

On Tuesday, Finance Minister Rebecca Evans stated that the local government settlement would increase by an average of 3.1% but acknowledged that this would vary on a county-by-county basis with some receiving more or less funding.

Cllr Charlie McCoubrey, Leader, Conwy County Borough Council, said: "I’m very disappointed that, yet again, Conwy’s settlement is the lowest in Wales.

"Conwy will receive just 2%, when other areas will get up to a 4.7% increase and the average across Wales is 3.1%.

"And although any increase is welcome, it will not be sufficient to meet the funding shortfall that the Council faces as a result of national pay awards, inflation, energy and fuel prices, and the increased demand for services.

"We’ll be studying the provisional settlement in more detail over the coming weeks to fully understand the implications for the services we provide. There’s a lot of work to be done and, I fear, some difficult decisions to be made".
