The Welsh Mountain Zoo – National Zoo of Wales, is hosting its own Margay Conservation Day this weekend, which includes a visit by global Field Researcher and margay expert, Lucy Hughes, of CREA (Conservation through Research Education and Action).

Lucy is visiting the Zoo directly from an ambitious long-term study into margay, in Panama’s Cocobolo’s Forest where they are gathering vital information about the habits of the margay, one of the world’s most elusive small cats. Lucy, a specialist in remote sensing, will be at the zoo discussing her in-situ work with margay, and raising awareness of this exciting conservation project.

Wildlife biologist, Lucy, will be holding free conservation talks on Saturday 23rd September at 10.30am and 1.30pm in the WILD Centre, alongside a field station pop-up based at the margay enclosure, throughout the day.

Alex Davies, Education Manager at the Welsh Mountain Zoo said: “The global conservation of animals, plants and ecosystems is the ultimate overriding ambition of Zoo’s such as ours. We work in partnership with many organisations and individuals throughout the world in a united effort to conserve threatened species and their habitats.

“Sharing information and raising awareness of the threats faced by these animals in the wild forms an important part of our work and it’s fantastic to welcome experts such as Lucy who can discuss their experiences and understanding of the margay with our visitors.”
