Health and care leaders in Wales are being urged to work more closely together to improve services and tackle inequalities, as the Welsh Government sets out its ambitions for the future of the NHS.

Health Minister Mabon ap Gwynfor said rising demand, an ageing population and increasingly complex health needs were putting pressure on services across Wales.

Speaking at the Welsh NHS Confederation's annual conference, he warned that continuing to deliver care in the same way would not be enough to meet the challenges ahead.

He said organisations needed to look beyond their own boundaries and work together to help people live longer, healthier lives and remain independent in their homes and communities.

The Welsh Government is planning a period of engagement with health boards and other parts of the health and care sector over the coming months, with the aim of developing a shared vision for how services should change.

The minister said: "If we want different outcomes for the people of Wales and an NHS that remains sustainable for generations to come, doing more of the same is not an option.

"Our ambition is simple: more people living longer lives, spending more of those lives in good health, and remaining independent in their homes and communities for longer."

He said the engagement would be an opportunity to hear from people working across the sector and gather ideas on how those ambitions could be turned into practical improvements.

The Welsh Government says the work will consider what needs to change in the short, medium and longer term, with a focus on improving outcomes and reducing health inequalities.
