A young girl, who just six months ago underwent a major operation on her legs, has raised a fantastic amount of money for a Conwy children's hospice with a sponsored walk.
Cassi Howel, from Anglesey, had the surgery in February and is being supported in her recovery with regular respite stays at Tŷ Gobaith.
In June, to coincide with children’s hospice week, Cassi took as many steps as she could at her school, Canolfan Addysg Y Bont, Llangefni, raising a brilliant £2,307.
Alys Howel, Cassi’s proud mother said: “Cassi has a progressive neuro muscular disease and was in a lot of pain with her legs. The surgery was to straighten them to allow her the best chance of walking properly.
“She managed 558 steps on the day and we are all so proud of her. She has come such a long way and after a few setbacks is recovering brilliantly.
“She’s a very strong character.”
Speaking of the support the family have received from Ty Gobaith and Hope House Children's hospices, Alys said: “A community nurse had put us in touch with the hospice last November and we went to visit as a family in December. It’s such a wonderful place.
“Knowing that our child is being cared for by skilled people who want to be there gives us such great peace of mind. It allows us to switch off and focus on doing normal things with our son Tomos, who is 10.”
Sarah Ritchie from the Ty Gobaith fundraising team worked closely with the Howel family on the event and said: “Cassi is such a brave girl and has shown amazing spirit with this challenge.
“The money she has raised will go a long way to helping us provide the very best care and support to children and families when they need it most.
“We are extremely grateful to the Howel family and thank all Cassi’s kind sponsors for their generosity.”
