Sizzling Hot, a new events company headed by the Caernarfon based dance record label High Grade Grooves is premiering the first of many events at Clena in Bangor (The Old Greek restaurant) on the 17th of April.
The aim of the project, funded by the Incubator Fund through Youth Music is to focus on the gap in alternative daytime entertainment and mellower nightlife that brings a summery, friendly but funky atmosphere during what is anticipated to be a beautiful summer after the pandemic.
The event at Clena is called My Big Fat All Day Party with a Mediterranean feel in the daytime between 2pm-11pm and a wild afterparty at Cube, Bangor until 3am.
It contains hand-picked DJs playing genres such as Disco, Funk and House during the day before going deeper, wilder and darker for a more intense party as the sun sets. There will be some interesting people at the venue, some of our DJ’s have attracted some big names to come and celebrate the launch with us and it looks to be a seismically packed night.
The line-up features both local and veteran DJs such as Endaf, DJ Hollie Profit, Mike RP, the indie musician Osian Cai along with Saxophone player Alys Williams.
A key selling point of these events is the addition of acoustic instruments with a DJ set. One of the project leaders reasoned that live music and the pre-recorded DJ setup stimulates positive energy, the live acts and the DJ bounce off each other in a captivating medley.
It’s true that it’s a very new concept to North Wales but the idea was inspired by the ‘question and answer’ technique often seen by DJs and crowds in Ibiza and at festivals, driving up engagement and bringing everyone closer together.
Other than delivering entertainment alternative to the intense nature of nightclubs and venues, the project nurtures a home-grown events scene with local people.
The project involves 16 young people (aged 18 to 25) who are being offered paid roles within the events industry, while being mentored by established DJs/Music Producers Hollie Profit & Endaf Roberts and experienced Events Manager Klaudia Zawadka.
The participants are all based in North Wales with majority of them being Welsh language speakers. The project is set to last approximately 26 weeks.
Alongside close mentorship from the above, Sizzling Hot offers weekly zoom tutoring sessions with UK Music Industry Professionals who work for leading brands: Artist Liasons, Operations Directors; Label Owners; Event Organisers, Music Platform Managers, Social Media Experts as well as established artists.
Osian Cai, the bedroom pop musician from Dyffryn Nantlle on the project states he’s “open and excited to learn about DJing as it’s a huge part of it!”.
As a local resident he calls the local scene “Close knit, where you’ll see similar people on nights out which can be nice, but there isn’t enough variation in terms of genres of music, feels, times and venues. We need different events at different times, and this is where I hope the project and especially the Clena event can come in and kickstart a new wave of options for the area”.
