Winter Light Chapter One (Story)

November 27, 2019 - 1903 views

Chapter 1 saw a bizarre and beguiling procession delight the crowds as they weaved their way down the street, led by a Viking ship and a bloody thirsty phalanx of Viking warriors.

Amidst this mysterious cavalcade emerged Ychen Bannog, an ox-like creature whose steaming breath, borne from centuries of slumber on the Great Orme, brought to life a menagerie of other forgotten monsters. But…the story has only just begun.

Chapter 1, produced by Salford-based outdoor arts organisation Walk the Plank, took participants and the crowd through a galloping tale across the centuries with a Victorian Circus Ring master determined to catch and tame these wild and unruly beasts.

Chapter 2 is told through a series of stunning projections on to a series of buildings running from the King’s Arms to the edge of Great Western Gardens.

In this breathless chase through the centuries, these buildings will be transformed into windows on time as, from one moment the mermaid slips through the waves of the sea as the Vikings give chase, before her shadow is spotted amidst a Victorian funfair where the reward for her capture – a mermaid’s purse – inspires the ringmaster to follow in hot pursuit. In this free event for all the family, created by video projection maestros Illuminos (who created a teaser piece in Chapter 1) expect to be transfixed by this magical story which offers a uniquely different pre-Christmas experience.

“Following the procession in November, we’re delighted to be the main storytellers for Chapter 2 which has given us incredible creative scope to imagine a wealth of narratives and possibilities. We’re really looking forward to unravelling this fascinating tale in December.” Rob and Matt Vale, Illuminos.

Winter 2020 will see a further development in this captivating story linked to imagined myths of the Great Orme and Llandudno’s Victorian origins as a seaside tourist destination. ‘Winter Light – Golau Gaeaf’ is a creative collaboration between Walk the Plank and Illuminos, commissioned by Conwy County Borough Council, Venue Cymru and Conwy Arts Trust and supported by Arts Council Wales and the Welsh government.
