Clwyd West MS Darren Millar met with business owners in Abergele last week to discuss the challenges and opportunities for the town.

As an historic market town, Abergele has seen a decline in footfall in recent years with shoppers choosing to buy goods online and at larger retail outlets and number of banks in the town closing. Abergele also saw the closure of car retailer Slaters in 2018.

Despite the struggles, there are still many excellent businesses in the town and a new banking hub is in the process of being established.

Mr. Millar offered to meet with several traders in the town to find out more about the issues they are currently facing and opportunities for the future.

Speaking after the meeting, he said: “It was good to meet with traders in Abergele last week and listen to their views.

"Abergele is a beautiful and friendly town with so much to offer and they were all keen to unleash its potential.

"While concerns were expressed about the Welsh Government's plans to cut business rate relief and pave the way for tourism taxes, businesses are also keen to seize the opportunity to entice more visitors to the town to enjoy its heritage, warm welcome, cafes and attractions.

“I look forward to supporting local traders as they seek to realise their aspirations and look forward to celebrating their future success."

He added: “Having attended school in Abergele and had my constituency office in the town for 17 years, Abergele will always have a special place in my heart. I will be feeding back the traders’ concerns regarding the business rates and tourism tax to the Welsh Government and will continue putting pressure on Ministers to provide these hard working people with the support they need.”
