Criticism of former health board chief 'rewarded for failure'

Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has criticised payments being made to the former Chief Executive of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board while working on secondment in England.

Gary Doherty left the health board in February to take up a post in Lancashire, but it has been revealed this week that the Welsh NHS will be paying him until January next year.

He was paid £29,592 from the day he left BCUHB to the end of the financial year on March 31, and by the time his secondment comes to an end in January 2021, if his rate remains the same, he will have received £188,000.

Commenting on the news, Darren said: “These are eyewatering sums that are totally unjustifiable, particularly in a health board that is struggling and has been in special measures for over five years.

“Last year we had ‘Marbella Man’, who the health board were paying £1,990 a day to work from his home on the Costa Del Sol, and now this.

“When Gary Doherty was appointed he said getting rid of delays and getting people working as a team was "not rocket science", yet when he left the board, little had improved.

“Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board has been under direct control of the Welsh Labour Government since it was placed in special measures back in 2015 and the Health Minister needs to act now to stop this former senior manager for being rewarded for failure.”
