Daughter takes on half marathon challenge in memory of mother

May 27, 2022 - 656 views

Sharon Morris, originally from Dolgarrog, has taken part in her first half marathon at the Run Gatwick Half to raise funds for a charity close to her heart.

On Sunday 8th May, Sharon joined over 1300 runners on a fast and scenic 13.1 mile route around the rural countryside and the buzz of Gatwick Airport, with an exhilarating run under the Gatwick airport final approach.

Adding to the roar of the plane engines overhead, and supporters cheering the runners on, there were also drummers, buskers, choirs and DJs along the route for entertainment.

Sharon, 47, ran in memory of her mum Dot Standing, who passed away at St David’s Hospice in Llandudno.

Talking about her running challenge, Sharon said: ”St David’s Hospice cared amazingly for my mum several years ago and as it was her anniversary, what better way to say thank you and remember my mum than to give back to the hospice.

This was my first ever half marathon, the longest distance I’ve ever ran and It was a really challenging race on a hot day.

“I hope the money I’ve raised helps support the great care given by nurses, doctors and everyone who works at St David’s Hospice.

“I felt a great honour in wearing the St David’s Hospice Heroes t-shirt when running the race and the one thing I wanted to do was make my mum proud which I think I did.”

Through kind donations of sponsorship, Sharon raised £738.75 (including gift aid).

Conwy Area Fundraiser James Wilde said: “What a fantastic achievement by Sharon completing her first ever half marathon!

“She’s definitely done her mum proud, and the funds will be a big support to patients and their families cared for by St David’s Hospice. Thank you Sharon for all of your efforts!”
