Final stage of Old Colwyn promenade development opens

The very final stretch of the new Old Colwyn promenade development is now open.

Contractors working for Conwy County Borough Council have completed the extra rock armour and resurfacing work by the Rotary Way entrance.

As a result the pedestrian and cycle path is now open meaning that users can enjoy uniterrupted access to the promenade from Old Colwyn to Porth Eirias without interruption.

Previously pedestrians would have to cross the road near the A55 access road and cyclists had to use the road to continue their promenade journey from Old Colwyn to Colwyn Bay. Permanent handrails will be installed in the coming weeks.

The nearly £18m project, fully funded by Welsh Government, has included building a 720m long rock barricade in front of the existing seawall using 160,000 tonnes of rock, raising the promenade and road by 1.5 metres, and adding a fishing platform and new beach access steps.

The promenade road initially closed in May 2021 for an 18 month period, before Conwy County Borough Council secured extra funding to complete all the work required on this stretch, extending the project to early 2024.

Cllr Goronwy Edward said: “This significant civil engineering project is part of the Council’s commitment to improve sea defences all along the county coastline. The Council will start work on improving coastal defences at Kinmel Bay and Towyn after the summer, with schemes for Llandudno and Llanfairfechan also in the pipeline with allocated funding.”
