Four-year-old raises over £400 in memory of her Nana

Despite the wind and rain, Alayah Thompson-Jones from Llandudno proudly put on her trainers and took part in the Nick Beer Fun Run to show her support for Nana “Janet”.

Earlier this month, the four-year-old ran the 1km along the promenade in Llandudno and was presented a medal and goat soft toy for her outstanding fundraising efforts.

So far, through her online fundraising page, she has raised £490 for St David’s Hospice. On her page it shows a heartfelt reason for taking part:

“I love her so much and miss  her. When she was poorly, she went into the hospice and they looked after her. So I want to raise some money for all the nurses that looked after my nana.”

Alayah is extremely proud of her achievements. Mother, Caroline Thompson explains:

“Alayah has not let go of the toy goat since being given it, the goat went to bed with her and he has been to school with her too. She has told her whole class about the run, her medal and goat.

“Nana Janet was a nurse in St David’s Hospice. After which she then volunteered in the hospice shops in Llandudno and also in the cafe at the hospice.

After she fell ill, Janet received care at home from St David’s Hospice and then sadly passed away last May in the Inpatient unit.”

Over 50 children and adults ran in the 2022 fun run, which is a part of the Nick Beer 10k Race Day organised by the North Wales Road Runners Club (NWRRC). So far it has raised a total of £2400 from the past three events.

This year, it will cost over £6 million to run St David’s Hospice services across North West Wales, with just a small percentage of that figure coming from the Welsh Government and Local Health Board.

The majority of this comes from community fundraising such as Alayah’s fun run. None of these costs are passed to the patients, their families or carers, because St David’s Hospice care is free to all.
