A North Wales police officer and an NHS nurse have completed an incredible endurance challenge in aid of retired police dogs — scaling the UK’s three highest peaks in under 24 hours.

PC Shannen Finnerty, from North Wales Police, and nurse Kate Roberts set off on Saturday, 21 March, taking on the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge.

The pair climbed Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddfa — completing the entire journey in just 23 hours and 40 minutes.

Covering 462 miles by road, walking 26 miles and climbing a combined 3,000 metres, their efforts were all in support of Paws Off Duty, a charity that helps fund veterinary care and welfare costs for retired police dogs.

While serving police dogs are funded during their working lives, support stops once they retire — often leaving handlers or new owners to cover potentially high medical costs as the dogs age.

The charity was founded in 2015 by PC Jackie Edwards, who praised the pair’s efforts.

She said the challenge not only raised vital funds but also helped shine a light on the ongoing needs of retired police dogs, adding that without public support, the charity would not be able to continue its work.

Shannen and Kate originally set out to raise £2,000, but their efforts have already brought in more than £2,700 — with donations still coming in.

Speaking after completing the challenge, Shannen said they were “fuelled by coffee and grit” as they pushed through the demanding conditions to reach the finish line.

Funds raised will go directly towards supporting retired police dogs across North Wales, helping ensure they receive the care they need after years of service.

The pair’s fundraising page remains open for a short time, with supporters still able to contribute to the cause.
