The planned extension at Ysbyty Glan Clwyd for an adult and older persons’ mental health unit is welcomed progress from the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board.

The planned mental health unit will provide a modern, purpose-built facility with 59 beds. This new unit will allow the best possible mental health care to be provided for patients as per the health board’s mental health provision strategy.

Speaking in support of the planned mental health bed capacity increase, Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, said:

“This is brilliant news because our current mental health services in North Wales are not fit for purpose. I have constituents who have to receive in-patient mental health support up to three hours away from home, and families who have to travel many hours to visit them.

“North Wales is in desperate need of improved mental health facilities, and building a new mental health unit at Glan Clwyd Hospital will help people receive improved levels of care closer to home.

“I am happy to see this investment in mental health services by the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board, and hope to see the positive impacts this new mental health ward will bring in the near future.”
