Members of the North Wales Road Runner Club and GOGs Triathlon Club recently organised a sporting challenge to raised funds for St David’s Hospice.

The ‘Billy Goat Challenge’ invited club members and also the general public to either walk or run 10k or cycle 10 miles.

In a bid to put the club’s athletes fitness to the test, they also held team challenges in the last two weeks in June. The main competition included 13 teams of 5 entrants, with three runners and two cyclists, and was based on an age percentage and performance basis, which compared the age and finishing times of all the entrants.

With nearly 80 participants taking part the Billy Goat Challenge raised over £700 for St David’s Hospice in Llandudno.

The overall winners however, were Team 1, which ironically included two top runners in Martin Green and Nic Brook, together with the top female cyclist Rhian Roxburgh, with good additional support from Rachel Morris and cyclist Tony Gibson, recording an amazing average percentage of 75.62%.

It proved to be very close contest in the end though, with Team 7 finishing 2nd and were just a fraction of a percentage behind the overall victors in 75.13%.

This team included the fastest 10k runner of the entire competition in Simon Cole, and the fastest cyclist overall in Simon (Rocky) Roxburgh, together with three quality team mates, in Adrian Leonard, Richard Scamans and Steve Owen.

In 3rd place was Team 4, with another good sprinkling of quality runners and riders in Ann d’Alburquerque, Ceri Hughes, Janine Butterworth, Tony Price Jones, and Sarah Ferguson Hudson, with the team recording 71.90%.

The challenge proved to be very close throughout with the lowest of the 13 teams averaging 60.14% to the highest at 75.62%.

Hospice Conwy Area Fundraiser, James Wilde said: “Thank you to everybody involved for all of their efforts. The monies raised through this challenge will make a huge difference to St David’s Hospice in what is an extremely challenging time for our charity.

"With the support of our community, we will strive to survive this pandemic provide free specialist end-of-life care to local people living with life-limiting illnesses in the future”
