Bodnant needs your help to plant quarter of a million snowdrops

A half-term tradition at National Trust Bodnant Garden will reach a major milestone this month as snowdrops planted by visitors will take the total display up to a quarter of a million.

For the past decade, supporters have helped the conservation charity to plant thousands of common snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) around the world-class garden in Conwy, creating a spectacular seasonal snowdrop walk for everyone to enjoy.

Now the Trust is calling on visitors to help plant another 20,000 snowdrops to extend the route and achieve the 250,000 landmark. The annual activity has become a firm family-favourite and returns this half-term from 17 to 20 February.

John Rippin, National Trust’s Head Gardener at Bodnant Garden, said: “Our half-term snowdrop planting has become an annual tradition and it’s fantastic to see so many people getting involved, engaging with nature and returning year-on-year to admire their handiwork.

“It’s only with the support of our visitors that we’ve been able to create the display around the garden and we now need your help planting to reach the milestone of a quarter of a million snowdrops.”

The snowdrop walk, which is also known as the white mile, currently stretches from the Old Park meadow to the Far End lakeside and through Furnace Wood, with ambitions to create a loop back up to the top of the garden.

Further snowdrop planting is planned at Bodnant Garden over the next five years, as well as developing a shorter, wheelchair-friendly link through the middle of the garden.
