Colwyn Bay has today paid tribute to 'local lad' and celebrated writer Terry Jones who passed away yesterday aged 77.

As one of the stars of Monty Python's Flying Circus, comedy writing genius, historian and a proud supporter of his home town of Colwyn Bay, many of the country's stars have come out to express their sorrow.

Fellow Python Sir Michael Palin described Jones as "one of the funniest writer-performers of his generation".

Terry was born in Colwyn Bay in February 1942 and always had his heart in Wales, despite leaving as a young boy. The town has always remembered Terry's contribution and he is mentioned fondly in the town's history.

In 2011 he took a keen interest in the fortunes of his home town's theatre, becoming its patron after it official re-opened after a £738,000 refurbishment.

In a statement on social media this afternoon, staff and management at the Theatre expressed their sorrow as the news was announced.

"The whole team here at Theatr Colwyn are deeply saddened to hear the news of Terry Jones’ passing.

"Terry was a wonderful and supportive patron and it was always a pleasure to welcome him to the theatre, in a town he was proud to be associated with.

"We send our love and condolences to Terry’s family and friends. Terry will always be remembered with great affection by all the staff, volunteers and patrons of Theatr Colwyn.

"This evening, in his memory, we will dim the lights for 1 minute prior to the screening".

In 2016, Jones received a Lifetime Achievement award at the BAFTA Cymru Awards for his outstanding contribution to television and film.
