Conwy County Borough Council’s Leader Cllr Sam Rowlands has shared his disappointment over the Welsh Government's provisional settlement for public services in the county in 2020/21.

Last year's budget saw further pressure placed on local schools and saw operational and budget cuts in a variety of services across the area.

Cllr Rowlands warned councillors that despite a generally improved situation across Wales, that the proposed level of funding would remains challenging for the council and the services it offers.

Whilst the average increase in Wales is 4.3%, Conwy has received the second lowest settlement in Wales at just 3.4%.

Cllr Rowlands said, “I am disappointed that yet again Conwy and North Wales is not receiving its fair share of funding; four of the lowest five in the settlement are from North Wales (Ynys Mon, Conwy, Flintshire, Wrexham).

"I’ll be working with the other North Wales Leaders to lobby for a fairer distribution of funding and to reinstate the funding floor.”

“It has to be said that the settlement is better than we initially anticipated 6 months ago, it is broadly in line with expectations following the Chancellor’s positive budget review in September.”

Over the next few months, through Scrutiny and Cabinet, councillors will be working towards agreeing a balanced budget for 2020/21 at the start of March.
