Phenomenal support for Colwyn Bay's seasonal dip

Families and individuals who took to the challenge of dipping into the sea at Porth Eirias on Boxing Day have been rewarded for their brave actions.

The event which started out as a way of remembering a much loved family member has grown in size over the past few years and supported fund raising efforts at St. David's Hospice.

More than £1400 was raised thanks to online donations and sponsorship, with £500 on the day. Thanks to on-going donations and support it is expected that the final total will be well over £2000.

The event was supported by Commando X-Fit, Bryn Williams Bistro and Animated Technologies. Organiser Tom Burke said the event in previous years raised money in the hundreds, so the final figure had been an amazing achievement.

Last year was especially meaningful for Tom, as his brother Ed was in St David's Hospice at the time of the dip. Sadly he passed away a couple of weeks afterwards.

The origins of the dip began a few years ago when Tom and fellow organisers Ash and Glyn set out on a rainy boxing day for a swim at Porth Eirias.

Glyn's Mum was there for the first one and enjoyed herself watching the chilly encounter. Unfortunately not long after that she passed away suffering with terminal cancer.

Since then they have made it their mission to get down there every boxing day partly in memory of Glyn's Mum, Tom's brother Ed and to help the work of St. David's Hospice.
