Challenging Mini Transat Sailing Race

June 09, 2020 - 1613 views

As North Wales eases slowly out of lockdown, watersports and sailing is beginning to get up and running and last week I found out about a very exciting project which is being stepped up in the county.

Wales based sailor Cris Miles has taken the first steps to enter the prestigious ‘Mini Transat’ race that takes place every two years, the next race being 2021.

The project currently based at Conwy Marina is believed to be only the second time a Welsh based boat has attempted the race.

The boat, brought from France before lockdown, is a ‘Classe Mini 6.50 - just 21’ long. Despite the diminutive size these boats are faster than most speed boats in the right conditions, capable of speeds in excess of 20 knots.

The race is a brutal test, with skippers only sleeping for 20 minutes at a time, and no luxuries on board including no toilet.

Join me for a chat with Cris about this immense challenge in our short podcast.

Simon.
